If you start a business today you have an 80% chance of going bust within 5 years. Not great odds, and things could become worse as Europe’s politicians continue to kick the sovereign debt can down the road and ignore the herd of elephants that seem to have gathered in the room. We are being fed a daily diet of short term fixes and uneasy compromises as politicians try and plot a route more focussed on keeping them in office than offering a long term solution.
The good news is that we don’t need to run our businesses this way. If you are currently matching what your competition is doing and not seeing profitable results, then it is time to think and behave differently. As businesses closely watch what each other are doing, they end up playing a destructive game of follow the leader that ends up with price becoming the only differentiator.
The late Earl Nightingale summed this up perfectly when he advised “Never compete, create.”
The harsh reality is that business owners who continue to do what they always have done in terms of sales and marketing won’t remain in business for much longer.
This message is uncomfortable reading and that’s exactly the point. Its time to step out of your comfort zone and try some different things to generate business. Just doing what everyone else is doing is not good enough, there is no safety in numbers.
